UPDATE - SUSPECTS ARRESTED

On Friday, July 23, 2009 two suspects were identified and charged in this incident.  An adult was charged with Robbery and a juvenile was charged with Aggravated Robbery.  The adult was remanded to the custody of the Harris County Jail and the juvenile was discharged to the custody of Harris County Juvenile Probation. 

SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS:

Black male, approximately 15 - 17 years old, 5'6", 130 lbs., with a dark complexion. Suspect #1 was wearing an orange bandana to cover his face, a dark colored hoodie and blue jeans pants.  This suspect displayed the firearm.

Black male, approximately 15 - 18 years old, 6'1", 175 lbs., with a dark complexion. Suspect #2 was wearing a blue bandana to cover his face, a gray and white checkered patterned hoodie and blue jeans pants.

WEAPON: Large black semi-automatic pistol.

VEHICLE: No vehicle was involved.

SYNOPSIS:  On Sunday, July 19, 2009 at approximately 12:42 a.m. a student who was standing outside the southwest corner of M. D. Anderson Library was approached by the two suspects.  One of the suspects displayed a large black semi-automatic pistol and demanded the complainant's back pack.  The complainant complied and the suspects removed items from the back pack and then fled the scene running south towards Lynn Eusan Park.  The complainant was not injured.

This incident is being actively investigated by the University of Houston Department of Public Safety (UHDPS).   If you  have any information regarding this incident, or can identify the suspects please contact UHDPS at 713-743-3333.

SAFETY TIPS:

Confrontations can occur without provocation, through no fault of your own.  When such confrontations do occur, there are some actions you can take:

  • BE ALERT!!
  • Be cautious when approached by an unknown person on the street, even the nicest person can have ill intent.
  • Remain as calm as possible.Your own initiative and clear thinking are your best defenses.
  • The University has more than 70 Emergency call boxes placed strategically around campus, use them! The call goes directly to the UHDPS Dispatch Center.
  • Report the incident. Call the police immediately and report what has happened. Call (713) 743-3333 or 911.
  • Do not walk alone, if at all possible walk in groups.
  • Try to notice details. This can allow you to provide the police with detailed physical and clothing descriptions of the person(s) involved.
  • If a vehicle is involved, try to note the vehicle's license plate number or the vehicle's manufacturer, model and color or any other identifying features.
