Due to work involving a feeder connection to the New Wheeler Housing Facility, electrical power will be interrupted to more than a dozen buildings.
Q: When will the outage occur?
A: Power will not be available for approximately 36 hours starting Monday, December 28, 2009 at 7a.m. until Tuesday, December 29th at 7 p.m.

Q: What type of communication will be used to notify the campus?
A: Plant Ops will invoke PIER notification system for campus-wide notifications. A second PIER message will be prepared; in the event the outage requires time extension, UHDPS will send out a second message. We will also prepare a Power Restoration message to go out via PIER so students can know when the buildings are accessible. McElhinney Building may also proceed with their important activities currently planned to take place on December 30th. Additional notifications will be made via Twitter and FaceBook.
Q: Will any buildings be accessible during this outage?
A: All buildings are expected to be closed and locked.
Q: What type of preparation has been made in terms of temporary power and lighting?
A: Emergency illumination will be provided by generators. In addition, ten (10) super bright diesel-fired lamps will be supplied to illuminate various darkened areas on campus the nights of December 28th-29th (if needed). Lamps will be re-fueled and continue to be in working condition throughout the outage. Most of the affected buildings have back-up generators to keep basic building functions operational.
Q: What type of security measures will be in place?
|A: Department of Public Safety will engage three (3) security officers who will be dispatched to patrol affected areas 24/7, in addition to police patrols already planned campus wide during the holidays.
Q: How should building occupants prepare for the outage?
A: Prior to leaving for holiday break, building occupants should arrange to:
- Per the Fire Marshall’s suggestion, remove all food items from refrigerator and leave the door ajar to prevent food borne illness
- Unplug computers and printers
- Follow other instructions issued by each applicable Building Administrator
Q: When will power be restored?
A: Please understand that if work progresses faster than planned, power will be restored sooner than Tuesday, December 29th (7 p.m.) Restoration will be promptly notified.
Q: What other measures have been planned so occupants will not find a mess when they return?
A: Many of the UH maintenance shops are mobilized to keep the buildings in check, such as for elevators, water pumps, lift stations, alarm panels, and IT networks.
